What is RSS?
What is RSS?
It’s a question I’m regularly asked here on a stomach pain, and one which I’d like to shed some light on. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and it’s used by millions of web surfers to keep track of their favorite websites. RSS allows you to receive automatic updates from your favorite websites without every having to visit them.
In the old days the only way to do this was to bookmark or remember all your favorite sites. Then you would have to manually visit all of them.
The Problem with Bookmarking
- You as the user have to do all the work
- If you forget to check the site you might miss some important information
- It becomes increasingly complicated and time consuming as you add more and more websites
RSS is changing all of this. Today most websites maintain multiple RSS feeds. You as the user can subscribe to these feeds and get instant updates via an RSS reader or sent to your email address.
What is an RSS reader?
The name is fairly self explanatory, but essentially an RSS reader allows you to sign up for multiple RSS feeds and have them all on one simple page. For your continence I’ve linked a few of the more popular readers below.
Google Reader
My Yahoo Reader
News Gator Reader
Blog Lines Reader
There are scores of readers available, if none of the above look like what you are looking for check out this more complete list.
What about email?
If you’d rather not deal with setting up an RSS reader it’s even easier to have RSS updates sent directly to your email. An RSS email reader works exactly the same way, when new content is added to your favorite site you will simply get an email with the most recent postings. It’s that easy!
