RLS Causes

RLS causes are commonly unknown in most patients. RLS or restless legs syndrome is a condition that is characterized by an irresistible desire to move the body to stop painful or odd sensations. This disease commonly affects the legs, but it also affects the arms. This is a condition that the patient can sometimes feel itching, burning, or tickling sensations on the affected body part. Once the patient moves the affected body part the sensations is lessened providing short-term relief.

RLS or restless leg syndrome is a condition that does not have exact or known cause. The researches have come up or suspects that RLS may be due to the brain chemical dopamine imbalance. There are also other factors that can be associated to RLS causes such as:

  • Hereditary – RLS commonly runs in the family in up to half the people having RLS especially if RLS begins at an early age. Researchers have found out sites on the chromosomes where genes for RLS may be present.
  • Stress and Pregnancy – Stress can worsen the symptoms of RLS. Pregnancy or hormonal alterations may also temporarily aggravate the sign and symptoms of RLS. There are some women that can experience this condition for the first time during their pregnancy particularly on the last trimester. But the signs and symptoms of RLS sometimes quickly disappear after they gave birth.

Here are also other factors associated to RLS causes:

  • RLS may be associated with nerve damage on the legs because of diabetes, alcoholism, or kidney problems.
  • There are also some chronic diseases that can lead to RLS such as rheumatoid arthritis and peripheral neuropathy.
  • People with low iron levels or anemia may be prone to develop RLS.

Since RLS can be a disturbing condition that someone can have, it is important to know the difference and identify the causes of it. Even if there is no known cause for this condition there are other factors associated to the causes of RLS.
